RBK+ Released TV Programme “Development Area” Dedicated to Indigenous Peoples Issues

Federal TV channel RBK+ released a TV programme following the results of the II Forum of Indigenous Minorities of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation.

The forum is held every four years, this year it took place from 4 to 8 April in Salekhard (Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area) and was attended by over 250 delegates from 28 regions of Russia.   Presentations were made by Igor Barinov, Head of the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs, Grigory Ledkov, President of the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the RF, Sergey Kharyuchi, Chairman of the Council of Elders of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the RF and other representatives of the indigenous community, public authorities and business, including Sakhalin Energy.

The participants in the event discussed various aspects of life of indigenous northerners, including sustainable development of traditional industries, preservation of national cultures and interaction with business; they analysed modern challenges and talked about the mechanisms of their solving. Many delegates highlighted the importance of realizing the potential of society- authorities-business cooperation. Such cooperation has been underway for many years in the Sakhalin Oblast.

Special attention was paid to the issue of indigenous languages preservation, which receives close attention both in Russia and internationally. This is confirmed by the fact that the period 2022 to 2032 the United Nations proclaimed the International Decade of Indigenous Languages.
